Elephantine sunset

Staying on a house boat on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, a small tinny provides the perfect safari 'vehicle'.

Hippos bob their heads up out of the water around me, occassionally erupting in a churn of water that has me reversing fast.

Elephants come down to cool and feed on the succulent aquatic plants. A 'duck' dive, trunk grabbing bunch, wave it to and fro to remove mud and water and then stuff into mouth - Mmmmm fresh salad. Deep water proved no problem with trunk snorkels, like periscopes, cutting their way forward through the water.

Sometimes when you stuff up it can be a blessing. I somehow got my days mixed up and arrived a day early for a flight from Bagdogra to Delhi. Arriving at the airport I soon realised my mistake and found the best hotel in town (about 2 stars). Bagdogra is a scruffy cross-roads town. By exploring the backlanes you can discover hidden gems, and in this case a covered (sort of) market. The monsoon skies provided a good backdrop to the colour and action. While challenging, the torrential downpours lent a freshness to the shots.

Pondalowie Sunset

I took this shot while on a dive trip with friends down in South Australia. Conditions were poor, so we went exploring the nearby coastline. A wreck on a beach provided some fun, and afterwards the cliff tops provided a splendid viewpoint to admire the sunset (having had a few drinks, I had to use my pack as a tripod.)

Canoe Polo - just add water

Take 10 canoeists, a ball, goals, enough water to paddle in and you have yourself one crazy game.

It is fast, fun and great exercise. In my experience it is the safest contact sport.

You can push players over, paddle over their boats and even ram them....but no, you cannot hit them with your paddle.

The Wishing Lake - Sikkim, India

Kechopari Lake, a holy lake the shape of a footprint (said to be the imprint of a guru) is at an altitude of 1951. It is believed that not even a leaf can disturb its placid, crysal clear waters - should a leaf fall to the surface, a bird will swoop down to pick it up so as to leave the lake surface unmarred.

Sea Kayaking - Keppel Islands

Only a day's drive from Brisbane, the Keppel Islands are magnificent for sea kayaking. You can camp on many of the islands, Humpy being my favourite.

The seas around the Keppels are clear and shallow. They are home to whales, dolphin, turtles, corals and tropical fish.

Trek to Goechla

Goechla is a 1700 foot pass in the shadow of Mt Kanchenzhonga - the third highest mountain in the world at 28,000 feet.

The walk up provides spectacular views of mountain ranges that bleed into the distance, streams whose banks are bejewelled with icicles and rime covered rocks, and forests of juniper and pine.

There is a rareness to the air and a sense of spirituality that is hard to ignore. The sacred mountain reminds you of how minor and transient we are.

I love Thailand, it's mayhem, happy people and anything is possible attitude.

In Thailand I have: ridden elephants, stayed in some of the dodgiest hotels, got caught in gem and gambling scams, floated up and down rivers, eaten more than I thought possible, haggled and laughed with tuk tuk drivers, found myself in places where I had no idea which way was home, watched too many bad movies, and even been on a ferry that sank.

The ferry sinking was a pure adrenalin adventure. Unplanned, unstoppable. She went to the bottom and tragically claimed several lives. Yet despite this, the experience created a bond between myself and other travellers that was to last for years.

Namibia - Quiver Tree Forest and the Giants Playground

Outside Keetsmanhoep is a place of amazing rocks and trees. Weathered igneous rocks form massive teetering towers. Cubes, slabs and balls stacked willy nilly as if casually tossed aside and left at the end of play.

Five kilometres from the Giants Playground is the the Quiver Tree Forest. These amazing trees are not trees at all, but in fact giant Aloes (Aloe dichotoma). They get their name from because some Bushmen and Hottentot tribes used their tough, piable bark and branches to make quivers.

Sea kayaking is a great way to get to those lonely places that would be spoiled by motorised vessels.

I never cease to be amazed just how much stuff you can pack into a sea kayak.
